Fishing Trips at Lake Wausau

The Wisconsin River winds its way through six of the seven communities in the Wausau area, offering fantastic opportunities for fishing enthusiasts. The Eau Claire River and Rib River flow into the Wisconsin River, creating the uniquely shaped Lake Wausau, which spans 1,918 acres and is a prime destination for anglers in the heart of Wausau, Wisconsin. This lake, known for its abundance of trophy fish, provides a vibrant fishing experience. A short distance downstream, Half Moon Lake offers another excellent spot for fishing, surrounded by natural beauty and teeming with various fish species.

Lake Wausau supports a diverse fish population, including musky, walleye, crappie, northern pike, catfish, bluegill, bass, sunfish, and yellow perch. The lake’s varied underwater structures create excellent fishing opportunities, ensuring something for everyone.

More than 16 boat landings between Wausau and Knowlton provide easy access to several fishing destinations, including the Wisconsin River, Rib River, Eau Claire River, Lake Wausau, Half Moon Lake, Mosinee Flowage, Big Eau Pleine Reservoir, Lake DuBay, and Mission Lake.

Hunting Trips at Lake Wausau

Hunting in Wisconsin's state parks provides opportunities in many popular locations. Some well-known areas for hunting include:

  • Governor Dodge State Park - Known for its deer and turkey hunting.

  • Devil's Lake State Park - Offers a mix of terrains for hunting small game and deer.

  • Kettle Moraine State Forest - Both the Northern and Southern Units are great for turkey and deer hunting.

  • Mirror Lake State Park - Popular for deer and small game hunting.

  • Perrot State Park - Provides a beautiful setting for hunting turkey and waterfowl.

 

Hunting and trapping are permitted in designated areas of Wisconsin state parks during specific seasons:

  • Spring Season: From April 1 through the Tuesday nearest May 3, both gun and archery hunting, as well as limited trapping, are allowed in open areas.

  • Fall/Winter Season: From November 15 to December 15, gun and archery hunting and trapping are permitted in open areas. Additionally, hunting with legal archery methods is allowed through the Sunday nearest January 6.
